District 14 Service Officer

We are very fortunate to have a dedicated Service Officer at District 14 and his name is Eddie Sherman and his phone number is 254-423-1272. There are many changes coming to the VA affecting Veterans Claims for Disability and assistance for our Veterans. We are just a part of the process from the National Service Officer to the District and Post Service Officer we all have our part to play.

On this web page we will try to explain what’s coming and what is here now. We will provide internet links andphone numbers to help assist you in your endeavor. We are part of the VFW Service Officer Program that maintain a network of volunteer service officers at every Texas VFW Post across this state to assist and educate veterans about federal benefits earned through military service.

The VA is going to an all electronic system for filling your claims on the internet. The two big program are eBenefits and My HealtheVet. You can still go to the VA to see an advisor, Texas Veterans Advisor, DAV Advisor, or schedule a meeting with your Service Officer at your Post. They can submit your claim electronically. They can set up for you an account for eBenfits and My HealtheVet. They want everyone online by the end of 2015.

The President’s Commission on Care for America’s Returning Wounded Warriors (established by Executive Order 13426 in March 2007) recommended the creation of a Web portal to provide wounded, ill and injured Service members, Veterans, their family members and care providers a single and transparent access point to online benefits, as well as related content and services.  In response, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) collaborated to develop the eBenefits Web portal.  VA has primary responsibility for the portal and is designated as the lead agent.  Since its initial development, eBenefits has become an expanding interactive Web portal for all Veterans, Service members and their dependents.

What is eBenefits?

eBenefits is a joint VA/DoD Web portal that provides resources and self-service capabilities to Veterans, Service members and their families to research, access and manage their VA and military benefits and personal information.

eBenefits uses secure credentials to allow access to personal information and gives users the ability to perform numerous self-service functions.  It also provides a list of links to other sites that provide information about military and Veterans benefits.

It is an essential way for Veterans, Service members and their families to receive access to and service from VA and DoD.

Who is eligible for an account?

Individuals can register for an eBenefits account if they are active duty military, retired, National Guard or Reserve, Veteran (non-retiree) or family members that are dependents (over age 18) of current or former military personnel.

Accessing eBenefits

eBenefits is located at www.ebenefits.va.gov. Before users can access the system’s self-service features, they must be registered in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and obtain a DoD Self Service (DS) Logon.

What is DEERS?

DEERS is an automated information system designed to maintain timely and accurate information on Service members and dependents who are eligible for military or VA benefits and services.  The system also detects and prevents fraud and abuse in the distribution of those benefits and services.

My HealtheVet is VA’s online personal health record. It was designed for Veterans, active duty Servicemembers, their dependents and caregivers. My HealtheVet helps you partner with your health care team. It provides you opportunities and tools to make informed decisions and manage your health care.

Specific features in My HealtheVet are available to you based on your account type. All users who have a Basic account are able to view their self-entered information.
